NATURAL RUG DYES

The majority of our rugs, especially our hand knotted oriental rugs, use natural dyes. Some of the materials used in our rug inventory include cotton and wool, which are dyed by experts before they are passed on to expert weavers. In most cases, minerals and plants are used to create different colors for cotton and wool. For instance, madder roots produce a powerful dye that is used in red rugs. In Iran, traditional rug weavers used different imported and indigenous plants, sea creatures, and insects to get colors for dying carpets. Beetles, snails, weeds, and flowers are also great sources of cochineal and dried pomegranate.
