Recently, Rugman, had the opportunity to explore the newest trends and technologies in area rugs, such as custom printed rugs, by participating in the huge DOMOTEX Asia/CHINAFLOOR exhibition in Shanghai, China. DOMOTEX is a flooring trade exhibition and it happens to be the second largest one in the world. The 2018 DOMOTEX edition showcased over 1,500 exhibitors from 40 countries. The newest trends of 2018 include bamboo silk modern rugs, 3D area rugs and the combination of different materials and textures in modern designs.
China is famous for its production in affordable rugs that are machine made or hand tufted. The predominance of the designs is also modern. It is only fitting that the convention was based in Shanghai, revealing the latest advancements from Chinese manufacturers. The exhibition presented a huge range of colors, patterns, and textures. The major trend at the convention in carpets was the use of layered colors and soft materials such as silk bamboo. In addition, the newest advancement in area rug manufacturing is the merging of technology with art. Manufacturers now have the ability to create custom printed rugs. This technology gives the opportunity for clients to provide an image and produce a digital custom printed rug, by printing the image on the most common rug materials including nylon, polyester, and wool.
The technology behind printing digital images is the use of the CMYK color model used in color printing, which can now be applied to printing images on carpets. Manufactures use the CMYK color mode to print any image without limitations to color quantity and image pixel. Through the use of a Chromojet, the dye is then injected into a pile of wool, nylon or polyester. The process only takes two days to produce a rug. The only requirement for custom printed rugs is for the image to be high resolution otherwise the rug will be of poor quality. Once the image is approved, the area rug can be printed on any dimension. The area rugs that were showcased at the exhibition with this technology were large rugs with vibrant colors.
