Welcome to Rugman’s blog!

At Rugman.com, we know everything there is about area rugs. Our expertise in area rugs stems from three generations of rug experts. Founded in 1998, Rugman.com grew out of generations of rug import and export business from the old country, which then expanded to wholesaling and then large-scale retailing. In 2001, Rugman merged it’s rug experience and entered the e-commerce market, establishing the first online rug retail store. We are confident that the knowledge we have gained over the years in area rugs will be beneficial for anyone interested in learning about rugs.

Rugman’s Blog:  Where you can learn all about area rugs

Our goal with the Rugman blog is threefold. Firstly, since we have been online for years, as pioneers we believe it is fitting to share our immense experience to provide resourceful content on area rugs. Rugman wants you to have access to the best source of trusted information on area rugs. Secondly, whether you are a rug buyer or rug lover, we want to share our love for area rugs with our readers. These type of rugs are a work of art. Every region, city, and tribe has mastered its own rug heritage in the artistic rugs they create and add a piece to history. Thirdly, we want our readers to empathize with the weavers. Rugs, particularly hand-knotted rugs, are the livelihood of weavers. They spend hours producing a beautiful piece of art, which serves as a functional piece for the weavers family, historically serving as a form of shelter or perhaps as a dowry, before the industrialization of area rugs.

Rugman.com wants to share the beautiful artwork from the weavers with you. Our business philosophy is to remove the middleman and give you rugs straight from the weaver. By removing the middleman, both the end user and the weaver benefit. It is also important to emphasize that our prices are so low that it really is bittersweet. We hope that our clients appreciate that they are able to purchase beautiful pieces of hand-knotted art at prices below their true value. The sad reality is that the trade of traditional hand knotted area rugs is slowly being cast aside. However, the emerging market of modern area rugs is also producing beautiful rugs representing the works of Tibet, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Morocco. More on this in our future blog posts.

Rugman’s comprehensive blog will have five main categories encompassing anything to do with the area rug.

The categories include

  1. Area rug design and look
  2. The production of area rug
  3. Area rug as heritage
  4. Rug selection and maintenance and
  5. Rug trivia

Area Rugs Design and Look

The most foundational aspect of area rugs is the design. When you are searching for an area rug you discern if you want either a traditional area rugtransitional area rug or a modern area rug.

Traditional rugs refer to oriental rugs, which have a look and design that are considered old and classic. Transitional rugs are a combination of traditional motifs and lighter color schemes, containing less bold colors. Modern rugs pertain to new area rugs without any rules, which the design and color have no boundaries.

The Production of Area Rug

Rugman’s blog explores in detail the differences in the production of the area rug. It can be broken down into six main categories including:

  • Hand-knotted area rug
  • Hand-loomed rugs
  • Hand-tufted rugs
  • Flat-woven rugs
  • Machine made rugs and
  • Hand-hooked area rugs

Area Rug as Heritage

Rugman’s third main category will explore the history of the area rug, the artistic characteristics of rugs and the weave, which will go in depth about the technicalities pertaining to creating area rugs. This category explores the evolution of the art of weaving, starting with the oldest rug, which happens to be the Pazyryk carpet, dating back to 5th century BC. We also discuss the origin of rugs, for example, whether a rug is from Iran or Nepal, and what the implications of those particularities are for each rug created in their respective region.

Rug Selection and Maintenance

In this category, you can benefit from Rugman’s designers, who will provide advice on how to choose the appropriate rug size for your room and decorating tips, such as the best color combinations. We will also explore the more practical aspect of area rugs: how to take care of your area rug to increase longevity and how to remove stains or pet odors.

Rug Trivia

Finally, Rugman’s blog has a category dedicated to fun rug trivia. It will be contemporary and it will mention area rugs in pop culture and media.  Did you know the underlying plot in the movie The Big Lebowski was the ruining of a favorite rug belonging to the character, “The Dude” Lebowski?

Lastly, we hope as readers you will benefit from our Rugman blog. The next time you pass by your rug, and you see a little figure in a kilim rug, we hope you know that the figure is a representation of the shepherds in the weaver’s village. Perhaps, your rug will have a signature, reflecting the pride of the master weaver signing his artwork. When you see a certain key motif used in your area rug, we hope that you realize that it showcases the pride of a region displaying its own design and style in their rug. A rug is more than just material. Area rugs represent years of history, art, and functionality that makes a house a home.
