PERSIAN & ORIENTAL RUG RECEIVING GUIDE

Congratulation on purchasing a handmade Persian rug or Oriental rug from Rugman.com. Below is a list of tips and facts to help ensure that you enjoy your rug to the fullest.

1. Packaged for Shipping to Protect Your Investment

Packed for safe and efficient shipping from Rugman. com's facility to your door, your Persian rug or Oriental rug will arrive tightly rolled and carefully wrapped.

Don't be surprised by the small size of the package - Our shippers are experts at packing rugs for safe and efficient shipment!

Before opening your rug, please check the packing slip and confirm that the item number is the same as that on your email confirmation.

2. Open With Care

Your Persian or Oriental rug has been packed with the underside facing out. Working slowly, cut the outer wrapping tape with scissors, taking care not to go beyond the packaging and into the rug itself. Carefully unwrap the layers of plastic and place the rug onto the floor.

3. Let it Breathe

After being wrapped in layers of plastic, your rug needs to breathe! A new rug smell has likely built up during the shipping process. Place the rug in a well-ventilated spot for a day or two and the odor will soon disappear.

4. Eliminate Creases and Curls

Safe and efficient shipping means folding and rolling rugs into small packages. You might notice that your rug is curling at the edges and/or creased along the fold lines. Placing a stack of heavy books along the curled edge will relax the fibers and have the rug lying flat within a few days. Similarly, regular use and foot-traffic will ensure that the creases soon disappear.

5. Take Advantage of the Light

The light and shadows in a room play tricks on our eyes and affect how we see color and brightness. You might notice some variations in the look of your new Persian rug or Oriental rug depending on the direction of its pile in relation to the room's light source. Try turning the rug so that the light picks out the features that best suit your decor.

6. Precisely Imprecise-An Indication of Artistry and Quality

Persian rugs and Oriental rugs are handmade works of art that contain natural variations in color and design. These are indications of craftsmanship that separate the genuine from a machine-made product. Enjoy the imprecision; it's a sign of authenticity and quality!

7. Protect and Preserve Your Rug

Handmade Persian and Oriental rugs are very durable and very few precautions will protect them from harm. If the legs of your furniture are less than one inch in diameter, or sharp, use coasters underneath them to distribute weight. Old-fashioned glass coaster work best but any will help protect the rug against marks and indentations that could damage its surface. Prevent permanent lumps, bumps, creases and curls in your rug by having it lay flat and keeping wires and cables from under it.

PERSIAN & ORIENTAL RUG MAINTENANCE GUIDE

Persian and Oriental rugs from Rugman.com are handmade from natural materials. By following these few steps, your new rug will last for many years.

Rug Pads

Placing a rug pad beneath your Persian or Oriental rug will protect it from wear and keep it from moving or wrinkling.

By allowing the natural fibers in your rug to breathe, a rug pad will increase its lifespan.

Rugman.com has a selection of rug pads designed for use with Persian and Oriental area rugs available. (Please contact our Client Services Department to place your Rug Pad order).

Rotation

Rotate your Persian or Oriental rug every 6 - 12 months to even out the wear caused by household traffic and to even out the fading caused by exposure to direct sunlight. Fading is natural as a rug ages, but keeping it out of the sun will keep the colors vibrant longer.

Let It Breathe

Persian and Oriental rugs should be vacuumed or swept with a broom once a week to remove dirt.

Vacuum or sweep in the direction of the pile to avoid pushing dirt back into the natural fibers of your Persian or Oriental rugs.

Suction vacuums are highly recommended, but those with a beater - bar can also be used on a Persian or Oriental rug. A Rotor vacuum should never be used on a Persian or Oriental area rug.

Go Pro

Do not steam clean or chemically clean your Persian or Oriental rug. Use a professional rug cleaning service.

Persian and Oriental rugs should be professionally cleaned with a cold-water shampoo.

Handmade Persian wool rugs, Oriental wool rugs and silk rugs should never be put in a washing machine or completely submerged in water.

Stain Removal Techniques

Pre-test a hidden area

Act Quickly
Treat spots quickly to prevent permanent stains.

Blot. Blot. Blot
Do not scrub your Persian or Oriental rug; it could warp the pile. Gently blot the soiled area, start from the edge and work your way in, using a white cloth or paper towel to absorb liquids from spills. Note that dyes and inks in colored papers and fabrics can run and further damage a rug.

Do-It-Yourself Remedies for Common Household Spills

** IMPORTANT ** Never use laundry detergent or a stronger concentration of the solutions than recommend below. They can cause further damage to your rug.

Food and Beverages, Cosmetic Powders, Modeling Clay, Potting Soil and Skin Ointments
For dry spills, vacuum thoroughly.
For wet spills, use ΒΌ teaspoon of mild liquid dish soap for each cup of lukewarm water. Use a rounded spoon to lift semi-solid foods off the Persian or Oriental rug; blot the spot until it has disappeared.

Red Wine or Dark Fruit & Vegetable Juices
Pour salt over spills of red wine, grape juice, or any other dark liquids that have spilled onto your rug. It will absorb the liquid like a sponge. Once the salt has done its job, use a rounded spoon to lift the mess off the rug, rinse with cold water and blot dry.

Pet Messes, Perfume & Other Alkaline Spills
Use a vinegar solution of 1 cup white vinegar to 2 cups water, or an ammonia solution of 1 tablespoon household ammonia to 1 cup water. Rinse well with cold water and blot dry.

Paint, Oil & Grease
Remove paint, oil and grease from your rug with nail polish remover then rinse well with cool water and blot dry. The ammonia solution listed under Pet Messes is another option for dealing with oil-based spills. Many of these solvents and solutions leave the effected area more prone to dirt than the rest of the rug. Rinsing well with cold water and blotting helps alleviate the problem.

Peroxide Bleach & Other Harsh Chemical Spills
Use only cold water on the affected area and contact a professional rug cleaner.
