Origin:

Baluch rugs are tribal, hand-woven in the eastern part of Iran by nomadic Baluchi tribes. The majority of them are made in the province Sistan and Baluchistan, which sits on the extreme south east border. A lot of Baluch rugs also come out of Iran's vast province of Khorassan which is just to the north near Afghanistan, and tend to be marketed in Mashad. Colors of Baluch rugs are usually predominantly a rich burgundy with some very dark navy blue and accents of beige. They frequently have either an overall pattern, tree-of-life, etc., or a prayer rug design.

History & Construction:

Bordering the Province of Kerman to the south-east, the province of Baluchistan is the location for the ancient city, The Burnt City, remains, which date back 4000 years. Nomadic tribes live isolated from modern society in black tents, as was done hundreds of years ago. Rugs are used in their primitive homes, or for insurance against hard times, and can take months to weave. Despite a simpler lifestyle, the rugs produced are quite pleasing to the eye. The hand-knotting is packed very tightly, using the asymmetrical Persian knot, resulting in high durability. Wool is the material of choice to produce this thick and lustrous pile while cotton, and on occasion, goat hair, is used for the warp. The weft is also made of strongly-spun cotton or goat hair. Vegetable dyes are mainly used ensuring color integrity, and over time, a soft and subtle patina.
